DIRECTOR'S COMMENTS
Bored. Do more stuff. Still Bored. Buy more stuff. Still Bored. Read Self-Help Book. Still Bored and Now Depressed. Most have been there. What to do? We employ eating, drinking, even knitting as potential remedies. The outcome? Gratitude for elastic waistbands and a plethora of matching purl knit hats, slippers, and scarves. During one stint, I produced slippers for the entire family in light blue…none of them fit. ALSO, I hate elastic waistbands. Options? Maybe reframing my interpretation of “boredom”? That was possible only if I wallowed around in it rather than scampering about like a squirrel on stimulants to avoid it. [Hum… glad I read that book. However, I want all the credit for the squirrel analogy.] Anyway, I am trying to interpret boredom as a messenger; a “state” urging reexamination and identifying opportunities to take some kind of risk (I highlighted my own hair once- turns out it wasn’t a hair-related message, but the knit cap had utility). Inside you’ll learn more about scientists who continue to take risks and in so doing benefit their communities and science. We are honored to celebrate their success. That said, taking risks isn’t just for individuals. To flourish, communities, also, must avoid falling prey to the Sirens of the Status Quo. Well, Don’t Worry about UF CARE. The 2023 Annual Symposium exemplifies our commitment to self-examination and growth. Throughout the events of April 16th and 17th, we promote direct pathways to community networks, showcase intra-and inter-institutional collaboration, highlight excellence amongst trainees across institutions, enhance career development through diverse perspectives, and share the expertise of exceptional keynote speakers; a blend of risk-taking and the best of the familiar (We’re NOT about risking it all!). It is our most comprehensive and innovative program to date—perfect for the 10th Anniversary. Really, you don’t want to miss it and, to be its best, it needs you! Check it out, submit your work, and share our excitement!
